Seattle Queer Exchange (USA)

Seattle Queer Exchange is a Facebook Group that is ostensibly for Seattle queers to “share resources.” Despite the fact that the group “(does) NOT ask anyone about their flavour of queerness,” Seattle Queer Exchange is also apparently a place for people to discuss stalking lesbian feminists who reject transgenderism.

Holmes v. Moss Point School District, et al. (USA)

destin_holmes_southern_poverty_law_center_photo_by_jonathan_bachman.ap_images

Destin Holmes was subjected to pervasive anti-lesbian bullying and harassment by fellow students, faculty and even administrators within the schools of Mississippi’s Moss Point School District. The harassment became so severe Destin was eventually driven out of school. The Southern Poverty Law Center filed a federal lawsuit on her behalf to end the bullying and harassment in the district.

The lawsuit describes how Destin temporarily left the district in March 2012 to be homeschooled after the then-principal at Magnolia Junior High School called her a “pathetic fool” and told her, “I don’t want a dyke in this school.” It also outlines how Destin and other students perceived as gay were subjected to anti-gay slurs on a daily basis and were physically threatened or attacked by peers.

Although many of these abuses occurred in front of teachers or were reported to school officials, school personnel did little to stop the abuse. The SPLC demanded in March 2013 that the district take immediate action to end the bullying and harassment. The demand came after an investigation found that district students, faculty and administrators targeted gay students because of their actual or perceived sexual orientation and nonconformity to gender stereotypes.

Gay and lesbian youth are disproportionately “gender nonconforming”  because, by definition, we buck the stereotype of who we are supposed to love. As a result of this, gay and lesbian youth are often targeted for homophobic abuse.

During Destin’s time at Magnolia Junior High School, students and district staff called her slurs such as “it,” “freak” and “he-she.” She heard such insults as many as 20 times a day. She also was denied access to the girls’ restroom by a teacher. Another teacher even refused to allow her to participate in a classroom activity where teams were divided by gender because Destin – according to the teacher – was an “in-between it.”

Even after Destin threatened suicide, school officials failed to take appropriate action. When a social worker providing mental health services for Destin met with the then-principal about the need to stop the harassment, the principal said he wouldn’t follow the social worker’s suggestions because “when you are in my school, you follow my lead since I allow you to be here.”

After leaving Magnolia Junior High School in March 2012, Destin was home-schooled until it became too much of a financial burden for her family. After returning to the district as a student at the Moss Point High School, Destin continued to face similar harassment.

The lawsuit, which asserts the district violated Destin’s rights under the Equal Protection Clause of the U.S. Constitution and Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972, also describes anti-GLBT bullying encountered by other district students. These incidents include a transgender student who was attacked and ridiculed, as well as a gay male student assaulted by students because he was open about his orientation.

We applaud the Southern Poverty Law Center for taking steps to protect gender nonconforming youth.

Men’s Rights Activists and Gender Identity Watch

Trinity Aodh Melody Hensley M. A. Melby Veronica K. Berglyd Olsen Kim Rippere Mary Ellen Sikes Dana Lane Taylor

Men’s Rights Activists, including Trinity AodhMelody HensleyM. A. Melby (also known as Marian Elaine Melby Aanerud), Veronica K. Berglyd OlsenKim RippereMary Ellen Sikes and Dana Lane Taylor, have started yet another petition to ask the Southern Poverty Law Center to declare a website run by a handful of volunteers (to discuss how gender identity as a legal concept is erasing the category of “Woman” and is making it impossible for Women to organize as and with Women) a “hate group.” Taylor, best known for harassing lesbian feminist Cathy Brennan about her rape, is also well-known for creating multiple sock puppet accounts to harass all Women who know he is Male.

Calling political speech that does not toe the liberal line “hate speech” is a common tactic of Queer and Liberal organizations. Rather than free and open debate, such MRAs want you to embrace thought-terminating cliches like  “Transwomen are Women.” These MRAs – who are invariably White Males who “identify” as Women or heterosexual “Queer” Women who have no investment in Lesbian community – continually harass the Southern Poverty Law Center, which actually has its hands full tracking racist hate groups across the country.

Cathy Brennan on Rational Wiki

Men who believe they are Women and their Manarchist brothers have created a faux “biographical” entry on the Manarchist Website Rational Wiki to trash Lesbian Feminist Cathy Brennan. Among other things, the Manarchists criticise Brennan for reporting a man who harassed her about her rape to his employers. Manarchists further believe that transgender people should be allowed to harass other survivors of rape. Indeed, Manarchists also believe that transgender “women” should have the unfettered right to threaten Women and Transgender Women who disagree with the assertion that penis is female. Some of the Men who refer to the Rational Wiki entry approvingly include Cristan Williams, Christopher Makin, David Taylor (who is the man who harassed Brennan on social media over the fact that Brennan was raped), and Wesley Bailey, all of whom are “transwomen.”

The Manarchists further believe Brennan was “out of line” for calling law enforcement to inform them about Men and Women who actively promoted child rape, thus demonstrating how fringe the Rational Wiki website is. Outside of pedophile, transgender and queer circles, child rape is generally viewed as morally repugnant.

The Rational Wiki entry also accused Brennan of “violating doctor-patient” confidentiality, failing to note that (1) Brennan is not a doctor and (2) has no patients. Doctor-patient confidentiality exists between a doctor and her patient. Here, the “patient,” a violent man named Emily Horsman, violated his own “confidentiality” by posting the name of his doctor on his Twitter feed. He further “violated his confidentiality” by posting the email Brennan sent to his doctor after Horsman harassed Brennan across several social media platforms for her refusal to state that Horsman is female. Brennan has the gall to believe that Men do not have the right to endlessly harass Women. She also believes that doctors who treat Transwomen have a duty to society at large to ensure that their patients do not engage in harassment of others, as harassing actual Women is not part of the transgender “real life test” of “living as a woman.” Harassing Women across social media platforms seems to be a common tactic of “transgender activists” who cannot take no for an answer, as evidenced by earlier examples such as Ethan McCargar, a “transwoman” living in Nashville who refused to leave Brennan alone after repeated requests to cease contact.

The Rational Wiki blog post is recycled endlessly in unthinking “trans ally” blogs like the one reported here. Interestingly, the Rational Wiki entry cites – but does not link to – a letter Brennan co-authored regarding gender identity laws. That is because if they did, they could not lie about it so convincingly, as the letter does not advocate for denial of trans civil rights. Rather, the letter proposes an objective definition of gender identity.

Transgender Activists and Gallus Mag (Online)

Despite their protestations that they are the most bullied and oppressed persons ever, transgender activists continue their campaign to harass radical feminists. Two recent Twitter accounts established solely to harass Cathy Brennan has numerous well-known harassers as followers including Laurelai BaileyDana Lane Taylor and Sarah Brown. Efforts such as this make it difficult to maintain a straight face when listening to transgender activists complain that they are harassed by women. The Twitter accounts highlight the obsession that Gallus Mag, a female blogger who maintains GenderTrender, has with Brennan.  Gallus Mag’s personal grudge against Brennan stems from a variety of imagined disputes, including that in February, Brennan offered to pay admission to a radical feminist conference to a random Internet person Brennan thought was a woman.

Florence High School, Colorado (USA)

The Pacific Justice Institute claims that a male student, Jessica Valentine, who claims to be transgender, has allegedly harassed female students in the girls room at Florence High School.

The story became more twisted when trans activists like Cristan Williams went on overdrive to state that the PJI lied. Williams is well known for making information up in attempts to smear anyone who disagrees with him.

EEOC v. Boh Bros. Construction Co. (USA)

The U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals has restored a jury’s finding from March 2011 that Boh Bros. Construction Co. illegally subjected an ironworker to severe or pervasive harassment based on gender stereotypes. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) filed the suit against Boh Bros. (EEOC v. Boh Bros. Construction Co., Civil Action No. 09-6460) in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana, charging that a superintendent, Chuck Wolfe, harassed Kerry Woods with verbal abuse, taunting gestures of a sexual nature, and exposing himself.  The harassment took place on the I-10 Twin Span project over Lake Pontchartrain between Slidell and New Orleans, La.  The EEOC presented evidence at trial that Woods’s supervisor harassed him because he thought he was feminine and did not conform to the supervisor’s gender stereotypes of a typical “rough ironworker.” In April 2012, a three-judge panel of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals (case number 11-30770) reversed the jury verdict, finding that the evidence did not establish that Boh Bros. had harassed Woods “because of sex,” which is the standard under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.  The EEOC asked the full en banc Fifth Circuit in September of 2012 to rehear the case.

Although numerous Courts of Appeals had decided that a gender stereotype theory may be used to prove illegal same-sex harassment, based on the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Price Waterhouse v. Hopkins, the Fifth Circuit had never directly addressed the issue before.  The 10-judge majority of the en banc Fifth Circuit held for the first time that harassment is “because of sex” if it is based on lack of conformity with gender stereotypes.  The Fifth Circuit also held that the issue is whether the harasser considered the victim to deviate from gender stereotypes, and not whether the victim fails in fact to conform to those stereotypes.  So, the court ruled, what mattered was that Wolfe saw Woods as unmanly — not whether Woods was actually “feminine” in some objective sense.
