The female gender identity of 19-year-old Kadin E. Moore caused a stir among confused crime news readers after some of Portland, Oregon’s media outlets identified Moore as a woman in their reporting of an incident at a local park. The confusion arose because the accompanying mugshot showed Moore with a beard, Adam’s apple and stereotypical male haircut.
Moore was arrested and charged with menacing after pointing a fake handgun at a group of three people.
A casual glance of the news coverage shows local news outlet KATU2 described Moore as a woman. Likewise, KOIN 6, an affiliate of CBS also described Moore as a woman. FOX12 avoided the fray altogether by simply describing Moore as a suspect. Pamplin Media, however, bucked the trend and identified Moore as a transgender female.
