Topshop, a fashion retailer which maintains approximately 500 stores worldwide, “has announced it now has gender-neutral changing rooms following” accusations of transphobia from customers.

Travis Alabanza, a man who identifies as trans feminine, decided to use a women’s fitting room at a Topshop store in Manchester, and was asked to instead use the men’s fitting room. According to Alablanza, “I was quite upset – it ruined my day.”

In response, Topshop replied that although the attendant asked Alablanza to use the men’s fitting room, “the policy was already in place at the time and its changing rooms are already gender-neutral space.” A spokesperson for Topshop also stated, “All Topshop and Topman customers are free to use any of the fitting rooms located within our stores.”
