Vallen v. Ford Motor Company of Canada (Canada)

Kira Vallen self-identified as a transsexual woman who is transitioning from male to female.  She is a long term employee with the respondent Ford Motor Company of Canada, Limited (“Ford”) and worked at the St. Thomas facility (“the facility”) as a training instructor.  In her employment she was represented by a union, the respondent National, Aerospace, Transportation and General Workers’ Union of Canada (CAW-Canada) Local 1520 (“CAW”). Vallen claimed harassment in the workplace based on transgender status. The Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario allowed some of the claims to proceed in 2012.
