Chrystofer Maillet is suing the government of Ontario after paying nearly $7,500 out of pocket for a double mastectomy as part of the transition from female to male. The Ontario Health Insurance Plan covered Maillet’s hormone therapy. To get OHIP coverage for sex reassignment surgery, Maillet would have to have waited for approval from a clinic in Toronto: the Adult Gender Identity Clinic at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. That clinic as waiting periods of up to 18 months. Thus, Maillet paid out of pocket and now seeks reimbursement.
