A number of Male inmates at Lawrence Correctional Center in Illinois are suing prison officials in connection with the prison not accommodating their transgenderism. Floyd Brown is serving a prison term for a variety of offenses, including aggravated battery. He is suing Illinois prison officials for deprivations of his constitutional rights, based on repeatedly being denied a prison job; being denied a bra; being denied timely, consistent medical care associated with her gender reassignment; generally being treated less favorably than heterosexual inmates; and the conditions of confinement at his prison.
Frank Edwards claims that he was sexually assaulted at Big Muddy River Correctional Center (“Big Muddy”) on September 9, 2014 and faced retaliation when he reported it. Jarvis Postlewaite, who is not transgender, filed his lawsuit with Dameon Cole, a Man who identifies as a Woman serving time for violent felonies. He is being held in segregation because he is on “predatory status.” It is not clear what “predatory status” means in Illinois, but it could be either that (1) the prison is concerned he may be preyed upon or (2) the prison is concerned he may prey on others.
A federal court recently let some of the claims proceed.
