Brandi Branson, a transgender woman, won a $150,000 settlement from Lakeland Eye Clinic after the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission sued the clinic for allegedly discrimination against Branson based on sex in violation of federal law. The EEOC claims the defendant fired Branson because he is transgender, because he was transitioning from male to female, and/or because he did not conform to the employer’s gender-based expectations, preferences, or stereotypes. According to the EEOC’s lawsuit against Lakeland Eye Clinic, Branson had performed his duties satisfactorily throughout his employment. However, after he began to present as a woman and informed the clinic he was transgender, Lakeland fired him. In settling the lawsuit, the clinic admits to no discrimination, but agrees not to discriminate in the future.
We support this lawsuit and the monetary award for Branson.
