The Canadian Senate passed an amendment to Bill C-279, which seeks to add gender identity to the Canadian Human Rights Act. Sen. Donald Plett, a Conservative member of the standing committee, proposed during a meeting that the legislation be amended to exclude federal “sex-specific” facilities like crisis facilities, washrooms, changing rooms and correctional facilities.
“This act will no longer allow biological males to identify as female and gain access to vulnerable persons,” he said during the meeting.
We agree that biological males should not have access to sex-specific facilities from which Women cannot escape, such as homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters and prisons. We also agree that Transwomen should not have access to space designed for Women recovering from Male Violence, such as rape crisis shelters.
