In 2010, Alberta Health and Wellness agreed to pay for up to 20 sexual reassignment surgeries per year until 2015.  The news came as a welcome surprise to some members of the Alberta trans community who received government letters informing them of the program and the criteria that must be met in order to qualify. Diane Gall, a male-to-female transsexual in Medicine Hat, has been waiting since April 2009 to find out if the government will pay for her surgery.

  1. There really is no such thing as “sex reassignment surgery” because no primate (human and non-human) can change its sex. For all practical purposes, it’s mutilating surgery on otherwise healthy genitalia and reproductive systems. Gender non-conformity however we choose to define it has always existed, but on the long time line of human history, “sex reassignment surgery” is a very recent phenomenon. It’s ghastly surgery, and PETA activists would be pitching a fit and protesting if doctors and researchers were mutilating the healthy genitals of primates in primate centers and zoos.
